Biographie

Ever get the feeling you’re being cheated by these forgettable and overly-inked rock bands? You know, the ones that act as though they’re the saviours of rock itself because they just read Motley Crue – The Dirt? Still there is hope yet, and Montreal’s fertile underground circuit is yet again the birthplace for a band that has already hit the ground running.

The Monarchy are a band that need no help in the songwriting department, nor in the studio. And soon they will need no introduction either, because if the dexterous songwriting of iconic Montreal guitarist and producer Kevin Jardine (ex-Slaves on Dope, Divine and MCA Records) on The Monarchy’s eponymous debut full-length is any indication of the band’s creative potential, they are likely to connect with far more fans of truly somber rock than did his previous band; one that still achieved nearly 100k in record sales and headlined the top-grossing Ozzfest tour in 2001. The Monarchy are onto something in a similar way that Queens of The Stone Age or even HIM were before they effectively turned the rock scene existing before them on its head.

Re-discovering his passion for gloomy and anthemic rock that inspired him in his early-nineties youth, Jardine sees The Monarchy as coming full circle in his musical abilities: "I wasn't inspired to write heavy screaming music anymore" he says. "There is a lack of good alternative rock bands like we had in the early 90's. The Monarchy are here to change that." With the soaring choruses in “Lonely Eyes,” “Oceans,” and “Run To The Moon,” expressive frontman Denton, who spends his days working at the studios of Musique Plus co-hosting top-rated Quebec music programming, exhibits a powerful and trained croon comparable to David Bowie, The Cult’s Ian Astbury, and blues rock cult figure Glenn Danzig. The rhythm section of Pat and Danick rounds off the four-piece, laying down a core rumble not unlike a slow-moving Panzer tank.

The Monarchy have already played over a dozen of well-received local gigs in their first year, self-released a full-length record (skillfully produced at Jardine’s renowned Uplift Studios), and claim over twenty five thousand fans on MySpace with thousands of plays each day. The band currently enjoys regular exposure of three songs on top-rated, weekly Musique Plus show "Babu A Planche,” creating a mounting buzz that Montreal hipsters are having a hard time ignoring.

The Monarchy are booked in the U.S. by Andrew Goodfriend at TKO Entertainment in New York, and are itching to prove their worth to other rock scenes cross-border. The ten-track monolith of an album is ready for license, and a video for "Never Let You Down" has been completed. Where will you be when The Monarchy start ruling your scene?
